  • 1.0 out of 5 stars from Gabriela Anderson -- Seemingly written to fail Kids : What a misleading title.... Did the editors really think kids would be charmed by this seemingly traditional book (e.g. that it would compete with witchy "Harry Potter" and the like kids can find in the youth sections of libraries?)...? It is quite disappointing to see how poor and limited the choices are on the current market for any American kids who would be interested in reading classical/traditional fairy tales -- even the original Grimm and Andersen stories have been adjusted the wrong way in some versions I've found, while books like this one and other similar to it boast only pretty covers but no real appeal due to a dusty ridiculous wording. I grew up in Europe reading traditional stories, all inspired by Judeo-Christian morality, written in beautifully-traditional-yet-modern enough terms (some of the best were retold by real fiction writers/translators) ... and my childhood was both charmed and instructed for a lifetime. There are no such educational options on the U.S. market so far as I've found -- and this book is just another sad example of a classic book whose purpose seems to be rather to alienate kids and make them feel anything traditional is silly, hence push them towards the dark New Age books .... Grimm, Andersen, etc were "gatherers of folk tales", they used their wit and talent to adjust the stories they collected -- this book would have benefited everyone from that kind of well-meaning approach. I wanted to use this book in my English classes, but it is useless. ( Reviewed in the United States on March 15, 2019 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Welsh Dragonfly -- Nice Selection : I have owned this book for years and read the stories to my son growing up. This collection is superior to a lot of others in that it presents a wide variety of stories - from silly fairy stories to more dramatic folk tales. It also gives a broader variety of countries, including genuine Welsh, Irish, and Scottish tales. It is an excellent sampler of the folklore of the Celts, and just plain fun to read. • 4.0 out of 5 stars from jo -- Very scholarly resource book. : Because the author chose to include old Irish words, some of this book becomes a little difficult. My guess is that it is meant for Gaelic scholars. I am not one, although I am a fan of all things Faerie. The notes and commentary at the end of the book are wonderful and it would be lovely if this could be formatted to allow for links to the notes. ( Reviewed in the United States on August 22, 2015 )
  • 4.0 out of 5 stars from Tracy -- Very entertaining : I found this very entertaining and highly enjoyable. It's nice to read about fairy-tales (especially ones that may have been largely forgotten over time) in these so-called "modern times", with all these electronic gadgets (IPhones, IPods, tablets, and even movies and video games) making fairy-tales a bit of a thing of the past (save for the most popular ones such as Cinderella, Snow White, Rapunzel, and even the Little Mermaid). • 2.0 out of 5 stars from john ellis -- Not really for me : Unless you are a historian or a professor of Celtic legends, this book isn't really for you ( Reviewed in the United States on June 18, 2017 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from SciFiMagpie -- An excellent folk story collection : A short and excellent book. I am of Irish descent and it seems to me that he got the feeling across perfectly. Peppered with Irish words and full of colourful descriptions, this is a book I can hardly wait to read out loud to friends. Even familiar stories were excellent. • 4.0 out of 5 stars from Dylan J Robinson -- How can you argue with free? : I discovered the free books section on the kindle app and kind of went on an ebook bender. This, I think, might be one of my favorites of the ~20 books I picked up. I have always been a fan of myths, legends, and tall tales, and this is some solid material. I will definitely be stealing ideas from some of these tales to pass them off as my own (like any good writer would). ( Reviewed in the United States on August 17, 2013 )
  • 4.0 out of 5 stars from Linda S. Suitor -- Authentic Fairy Tales : I like this book for some easy reading, and fun. The Fairy Tales are written pretty much as they would have been spoken from generation to generation. The language and words sometimes used helps to authenticate the Fairy Tales and in my opinion gives even more enjoyment to the stories. ( Reviewed in the United States on February 16, 2013 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Theageddragon -- Beautiful Volume of Unusual Stories : This little book is beautifully made; has clear print and contains stories which you probably haven't heard. The miniature illustrations are delightful. The book fits comfortably into one hand. It's made of strong paper with hardback boards. Best of all it has its own ribbon bookmark. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on January 12, 2020 )
  • 1.0 out of 5 stars from Kaz -- Does NOT work on Kindle! : This should not be available on Kindle as the text is simply a scan, i.e. a picture, of the printed book. The font is tiny and unreadable. Even when you enlarge the scan, the font is still really small AND the edges of the page are beyond the frame, so you'd have to scroll left and right at every line, losing your line in the process. Totally unusable! ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 30, 2020 )
  • 4.0 out of 5 stars from Crystallillian -- Enjoyed : I did enjoy this book, it was interesting to see the similarities of the Celtic fairy tales to the English fairy tales. It is also very well written. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on January 26, 2020 )
